REMEMBER THIS! There are guidelines when it comes to designing specific architectural columns.
The five classical orders each have their own distinct characteristics. Also, they are proportioned around the diameter at the base of the column in relation to its height.
Doric Order - The column height is around six to eight times the lower diameter of the column shaft. Doric columns come in two varieties, Greek and Roman. A Roman Doric column is similar to Greek, with two exceptions: Roman Doric columns often have a base on the bottom of the shaft. Roman Doric columns are usually taller than their Greek counterparts, even if the shaft diameters are the same.
Ionic Order - The Ionic column rests on a base and has distinctive volutes on the capital. The column height is around nine to ten times the lower diameter of the column shaft.
Corinthian Order - The Corinthian order also has a base. Its capitals are adorned with acanthus leaves and intricate volutes. The column height is around ten to twelve times the lower diameter of the column shaft.
Tuscan Order - The Tuscan order is characterized by its simplified design, similar to the Doric order but with a base. The shaft is not fluted. The column height is usually around seven times the lower diameter of the column shaft.
Composite Order - The Composite order combines elements of both the Ionic and Corinthian orders. The column height is usually around ten times the lower diameter of the column shaft.
When designing classical structures, it's important to keep in mind the principles of the classical orders. While there are no strict rules for adhering to specific proportions, these proportions serve as guides to creating visually appealing facades. While the classical orders provide a framework for classical architecture, there is still room for artistic interpretation and adaptation within these guidelines.
What is its relationship to professional practice? Let us all be mindful that our designs are the reflection of our personality. Just because our clients don't know about this ruling under the proper proportions of specific architectural columns, that doesn't mean we are not going to apply these rules. Delivery of quality service to our clients is our number one priority which also involves integrity and authenticity.
